As he uttered these words, my mind raced back to the time when I played football over 20 years, first as a 10-year-old, then as school football team captain in high school, and eventually as a midfielder for the University of Roehampton.

I could not stop wondering how business and football have so many similarities.

Just like football has goalkeeper as the last line of defense, then defenders, then midfield which connects strikers to defenders, in business, you have finance as your defense, and marketing as a link between sales and finance. They all play together to win a match.

Just like we don’t play football without the goalkeeper, or defender or midfielder, or striker, we can’t play the game of business without having finance, marketing, and sales working together.

I realized that in my business, marketing, finance, and sales were siloed. There was no connection. And, for me, marketing was the weakest link.

I needed to understand how marketing works.

So I invested my time and money, over £63k for 3 years, learning from people like Todd Brown, Ryan Leveque, Andy Harrington, Rudy Mawer, Sunny Lenarduzzi, Simon Coulson, Jon Penberthy, and Tom Breeze. Did all this to connect the dots between marketing, sales, and finance and fix the weakest link.

This equipped me to become a CEO who knew what was going on in all departments of the business. I now had clarity on sales, marketing, and finance and how they worked together.

Believing that Bigger is Better

Business growth means more profit, which is a misconception.

We  see online entrepreneurs claim that they have grown their business from five to six figures, six to multiple six figures or seven figures.  But we never see them claim how they have grown their profit from X to Y figures.

Let me ask you a question.

Which one would you take?

A business doing a revenue of £100k a year and profit of £30k 

OR

A business doing a revenue of £150k a year and profit of £15k.

You will take the business with high profit, right?

So, bigger revenue is not always better.

Believing That Investing In Marketing Will Make You More Profit

Marketing does not reflect the costs of delivery and other expenses of running the business and taxes. It only covers the costs of the acquisition of clients.

So you could think that you are making money but be at loss after accounting for the cost of delivery.

A LinkedIn coach reached out to me as she was sick of seeing the revenue going down. She thought she made £18k in four months. Taking into FB ads costs of £3,305, sales commission of £1,800, costs of delivery of £370 for 10 1:1 sessions at £37/hr based on her last year’s figures and £3k expenses over fours months on £750/month, she was left with £9,525 before paying TAXES. After allowing for 40% tax, which is £3.8k, she was left with £5.7k over 4 months, which is roughly £1.3k per month.

She was surprised to see all these figures. She had never calculated her business profit properly. The only figures she had seen were bank balance and her revenue figures. Her accountant gave her final year-end accounts for tax filing purposes. 

After looking at all this she said she would have earned more had she been in a job.
